- How does a beaver build a dam??? By Caleb, William & Trent
Beavers build dams in shallow spots and the water is not moving very much. a normal beaver colony will build a dam half a mile. Beavers build dams to make ponds as protection from predators like coyotes, wolves & bears and to provide easy access to food during winter. "Beavers start construction by diverting the stream to lessen the water's flow pressure. Branches and logs are then driven into the mud of the stream bed to form a base. Then sticks, bark, rocks, mud, grass, leaves, masses of plants, and anything else available, are used to build the superstructure. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaver_dam)
